Plumbing & Hot Water Tips for Seasonal Residents

Before closing up your Cape home each fall, make sure your property is ready for another New England winter. Prevent frozen pipes and other plumbing-related issues by following these guidelines:

  1. Check with a Snow’s professional to discuss turning off your water supply and your heating system before you leave for the season. If it is safe to do so, depending on the condition of your property and equipment, this will allow you to drain your pipes to prevent them from freezing and/or bursting in frigid temperatures. Ask a Snow’s certified plumber to blow compressed air through your pipes to ensure they have been drained completely.
  2. Consider adding insulation to your pipes. Heat tape and foam pipe insulation are options that can help keep your pipes warmer during freezing weather.
  3. Add home monitoring protection to your property for greater peace of mind while you’re away. If there is any issue related to your heating or water heating equipment, you’ll be notified right away and we will be on our way to fix it.
